Johnny Bench is coming to Harbor Hills: Free Event

Major League Baseball Great Johnny Bench to Visit Munroe Regional Medical Center Bench will also participate in a special joint replacement educational presentation.

Ocala, Fla. (October 18, 2010) — Munroe Regional is pleased to announce that Major League Baseball Hall of Fame legend Johnny Bench will be at the medical center on Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. to tour the Munroe Orthopedics program and visit with patients at the medical center.

Following his visit to Munroe, Mr. Bench will participate in a special joint replacement educational presentation at Harbor Hills Golf and Country Club, located at 6538 Lake Griffin Road, Lady Lake. He will join Munroe Orthopedics surgeons, Dr. Derek Farr and Dr. Nirav Gupta of Twin Palm Orthopedics, in discussing the benefits of joint replacement surgery. The presentation will begin at 12:45 p.m. Pre-registration is required to attend this free event, as seating is limited. Interested individuals call register by calling Munroe’s Health Resource Line at 352.867.8181.

Johnny Bench underwent total hip replacement of his right hip in April of 2004 after suffering for years from chronic joint pain. He discussed his options with his surgeon and received a Stryker hip implant. After undergoing the procedure, Bench was able to realize his lifestyle recovery goals and get back to his active life without hip pain. Since then, he has shared his joint replacement experience with attendees at Stryker educational seminars throughout the United States.

When he began experiencing pain in his left hip, Bench knew not to wait until he was sidelined by the pain before seeking help. He knew first-hand the relief his successful hip replacement in 2004 brought him and elected to undergo total hip replacement of his left hip in February 2010.

Just as he had in 2004, Bench spoke with his surgeon and opted to receive the latest technology available from Stryker. Johnny was the first patient to receive Stryker’s Mobile Bearing Hip™. Its unique anatomic design and technology offers patients like Bench the potential for increased stability, range of motion1,2,3,4,5 and a greater resistance to wear6.

Fully recovered, Bench splits his time between Naples and Palm Springs with his wife Lauren and their two young sons, Justin and Joshua, while his oldest son Bobby attends Boston University. Bench also continues to perfect his golf game and travel across the U.S. sharing his experience with arthritis and joint replacement with joint pain sufferers on behalf of Stryker Orthopaedics.

Volunteer around Harbor Hills

Volunteering can be fulfilling and enjoyable. There are several organizations around town that can use a helping hand. Some you may need to have 30 hours of training like Florida Gaurdian ad Litem Program and others all you have to do is simply fill out an application. For example to volunteer at The Villages Hospital, one would need to go through HIPPA training (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). This training which takes two hours, teaches volunteers the importance of maintaining confidential information. Below is a partial list in no particular order of places to volunteer:

1. Lady Lake Library
2. American Red Cross
3. Florida Center for the Blind
4. Florida State Golf Association
5. Habitat for Humanity of Lake Sumter
6. Humane Society of Lake County
